Effect of Dark Mode on Screens
Short Summary
For any smartphone, the screen contributes to a substantial amount of the total energy consumption. Literature confirms that for OLED/AMOLED screens typically used in mobile phones (Light-emitting diode in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compound that emits light in response to an electric current.), the use of dark mode has significantly less energy consumption.

On the basis of this fact, Google uses longer battery life in smartphones as a selling point for the dark mode in Android Q. But the actual motivations for the consumer to opt for using dark mode have not been studied so far, and they may or may not relate to its energy saving benefits alone. There could be other factors that play a role in the users’ preference of one type of UI over another.

Thus the research question for our study is - “What makes the dark mode on mobile phones attractive to consumers? ”
